About Engelina Margaretha Carry Lissaur

Engelina Margaretha Carry Lissaur (known as Ellien) was a pupil at the Montessori school De Wielewaal at Corellistraat 1 in Amsterdam. She was deported to Bergen-Belsen during the war. After the liberation of the camp, she was taken to Malmö (Sweden) to recover. On 15 May 1945, Ellien Lissaur was taken to a temporary hospital in Landskrona. Ellien Lissaur was born on the September 2nd 1930 in Amsterdam, as the daughter of Jessiah Lissaur and Lieselotte Lissaur (nee Ballin).


Jessiah and Lieselotte, also called Lilo, had married a year earlier. Jessiah was from a wealthy, influential Jewish family from Amsterdam, who reportedly even had ties with the Dutch Queen.

The cousin of Ellien Lissaur, Mr. Scheidt, is looking for anyone who remembers Ellien "Puppi" Lissaur and her mother or father Jessia Lissaur.

We are currently working on the Ballin-Scheidt family genealogy and are looking for anyone who may have known or remembers Mr. Scheidt's family members in Amsterdam before the war and during the Nazi occupation and later in Westerbork, Bergen-Belsen, Neungamme or after liberation in Sweden.

This was taken in the mid 1930s, the man in the picture is Jessia Lissaur, Engelina's father, and the children are class mates probably from the Montesorri School she attended, Engelina is the third one from right.

In Memoriam

Engelina (called Ellien) was in hiding in Amsterdam for most of the war. In 1944 she was arrested and deported together with her mother to the camp Bergen-Belsen. Ellien was 14 years old and had growing pains. Malnutrition and hard work weakened Ellien fast. After being deported to two other camps, she fell terribly ill. Ellien lived to see the liberation. On May 15th she died in a hospital in Zwe…
