Max Cohen was the son of Simon Cohen and Eva Levie. As a child, he lived at Voorstraat 20 in Meppel, where his father traded in textiles. Max spent his childhood and his school days in Meppel, but left for Amsterdam in 1940. He was a football fanatic and one of the few Jews to play for the football club Alcides, as keeper for the fifth team.
