The "Aussenkommando Moerdijk"

an extern labour camp of Vught.

The only German-style concentration camp that was set up in our country was concentration camp Vught, which was opened in January 1943. The camp had a number of “Aussenkommando’s“ (satellite camps) including Moerdijk. This command was located in the old barracks of the anti-aircraft artillery near the harbour. Fifty S.S. men were appointed as guards and the first prisoners arrived on 26 March 1943. The Aussenkommando (polpularly known as “Moerdijk concentration camp”, was dissolved at the end of February 1944.

The Organization Todt was the employer of the prisoners. They had to perform their duties under terrible conditions and strict surveillance. The barracks in which they stayed were small and dirty. At work there was much beating by the S.S. and the Jewish prisoners had it worse than the political prisoners. They wore blue and white striped uniforms and clogs and had no coats. Summer and winter, even with fifteen degrees of frost, the same clothing. The political prisioners had a five-inch wide crown warp over their heads while the Jewish prisoners wore a star.

The people who worked in Moerdijk went on foot, those who had to travel further were transported in open trucks. There was hardly any medical care. The seriously ill were transporte on an open truck to the hospital barrack in camp Vught. Also a few attempts to escape have been made.
