Het echtpaar Wessel was ondergedoken in de Bootenmakersstraat in Zaandam. Hier werden ze in de nacht van 22 op 23 november 1943 opgepakt, nadat hun onderduikverlener was verraden, wat tot gevolg had dat Max en Elly tijdens de inval ook werden ontdekt. Elly wist via de tuin te ontsnappen, maar keerde terug omdat ze haar handtas met haar bezittingen had achtergelaten en werd toen alsnog gearresteerd…
