Jonas Elekan

Jonas Elekan, son of Simon Elekan and Klara Finsij, was born in Amsterdam on 18 April 1897. He had a younger brother Aron, who was born on 28 May 1898. He lived with his parents and brother at Weesperstraat 4 2^nd floor but early July 1897, Jonas’ parents and their two children left for Antwerp, where father Simon got employed as a diamond worker. Jonas' date of death is listed as 30 Sept 1942, which is a day that many prisoners who were chosen as labor in previous transports were gassed. 

However, there is an official death certificate issued from the Auschwitz record books for a Jonas Elekan who was born on 18 April 1887 in Amsterdam. There does not seem to have been a Jonas Elekan born on that day in Amsterdam, so it is certainly an erro…

According to the "Sterbebücher" (death records) of Auschwitz, Jonas Elekan was murdered there on 22 August 1942. However, in the death registration of Auschwitz had been made an error too: his year of birth was listed as 1887 while this had to be 1897.
