Machiel de Vries joined the Hollandia-Kattenburg textile factory in Amsterdam on 23 June 1941. On Wednesday, 11 November 1942, around 4:30 PM, Willy Lages conducted the Sicherheitspolizei raid on the Hollandia factories. Access is subject to authorization from the Stichting Joods Maatschappelijk Werk.The Jokos file reveals that a claim was lodged for compensation for valuables surrendered to the Lippmann-Rosenthal looting bank (L-claim, number 12483/15899).

Machiel's moeder overleed in 1918. Zijn vader, Mozes de Vries, hertrouwde en kreeg nog twee kinderen, Marcus en Marianna. Machiel woonde bij zijn vader en stiefmoeder.

Machiel is gehuwd in 1942 en is gescheiden in april 1943.
