Jacob Nijstad werd geboren op 12 juni 1882 in Assen. Hij was de zoon van Flora Nijstad-Nathans en Hartog Meijer Nijstad. De vader van Jacob was vleesschouwer en had een slagerij. Jacob had twee zussen en vier broers. Jacob werd vernoemd naar een oudere broer (geboren in 1878) die maar één jaar is geworden. Op 31 augustus 1910 trouwde Jacob met Johanna Creveld in Utrecht.
