Joseph is een zoon van Israel Levie Muller en Grietje Berkelo. Hij trouwde 12 juli 1908 met Kaatje de Vries (20 jaar), dochter van Benjamin de Vries en Ester de Metz.
Kaatje Muller-de Vries was married to Joseph Muller. The couple lived at 122 Gedempte Zuiderdiep in Groningen. They had a child who survived the war. The couple had a several items of jewelry looted from them at Westerbork.
