About Abraham van Rijs and his family

Abraham van Rijs, manager and staff manager in a business, was a son of Isaac van Rijs and Heintje Bosboom. On 29 November 1928 he married in Rotterdam Sophia Hegt, a daughter of Alexander Hegt and Diena Katz. In Leiden, the couple had two daughters, namely Henny Hetty in 1931 and Dinah in 1935. They were killed in Sobibor, together with their parents.

About Henny Hetty van Rijs, sister Dinah (Diny), parents & "Rothsteintje".

Hennie Hetty van Rijs was the eldest daughter of Abraham van Rijs and Sophia Hegt. She was born in Leiden but moved with her parents and younger sister Dinah (Diny) to Heemstede at Timorstraat 31. Henny Hetty and her sister Diny went to school there, named the Voorwegschool. At that school and in their school class was also this daughter of the Klinkenberg family, Dineke. Access is subject to authorization from the Stichting Joods Maatschappelijk Werk.The Jokos file reveals that a claim was lodged for compensation for valuables surrendered to the Lippmann-Rosenthal looting bank (L-claim, number 12).

About Sophia Hegt and her siblings

Sophia Hegt, daughter of Alexander Hegt and Diena Katz, married 29 November 1928 in Rotterdam Abraham van Rijs, a son of Isaac van Rijs and Heintje Bosboom. The couple had two children, who both together with their parents were killed in Sobibor.  However, Sophia had five siblings, namely Sijbilla, Hester, Rachel Mientje, Michiel and Samuel, of whom some have survived the Shoah.
