Edith and Mirjam came to the Netherlands on January 12th, 1939. They stayed in a refugee facility in Wijk aan Zee, then in the Burgerweeshuis. They got diphtheria in the summer of 1939 and were in the hospital for a while. Only in November 1939 did they move in with their parents, who were then living in Amsterdam, at the Plantage Doklaan. In January 1940 they moved to Haarlem.

Herz Izak trouwde met de 14 jaar jongere Rywka Blumenberg. Zij kregen drie dochters Edith (*Hamborn(D) 1932), Mirjam (*Duisburg(D) 1935), Marlene (*Amsterdam 1939). Het gezin vestigde zich op 9 oktober 1940 in Nijmegen, komende vanuit Haarlem. Edith en Mirjam bevonden zich in januari 1939 al in Nederland. Zij verhuisden van het ene kinderopvanghuis naar het andere. Hun moeder lag in het ziekenhuis…
