Joseph Koopman was a son of Emanuel Koopman and Schoontje Levij. He maried Sara Sluijzer in Amsterdam on 25 November 1920, a daughter of Mozes Sluijzer and Judith Pront.
Joseph was born in a family with nine children, of whom two children have died in childhood. His other siblings, . Isaac, Salomon, Levie, Hijman, Samson and Betje, have been killed all during the Holocaust.
