About Hijman Lelie

Hijman Lelie was arrested in Barchem by the Sicherheitzpolizei on September 15, 1941. He had been transported from Barchem to Arnhem, subsequently to the prison in Scheveningen and finally to camp Amersfoort. Hijman was deported to Buchenwald, where he arrived on March 31, 1942. Next he had been taken to Mauthausen, where he arrived on June 26, 1942. Hijman died in Mauthausen on July 9, 1942.

His life before the arrest

Widowed since 1936 the merchant was father of four children. His wife Christina came from Dokkum in Friesland. Her family had loose connection to Sneek and Dutch-Westfalian merchant families.

Hijman himself lived last in Amsterdam before his arrest, one of his sons - Johann - had also an address there. The documents from Buchenwald lists him as non-religious and Dutch national.
