Biography

About Berdina de Vries, her spouse Philippus de Groot and their children Roosje and Emanuel de Groot.

Berdina de Vries was a daughter of Manus de Vries and Clara Bilderbeek. She married 5 December 1917 in Amsterdam Philippus de Groot from Vledder, born there 24 January 1889 as son of Hartog de Groot and Roosje Pinto. The couple had two children, namely Roosje in 1920 and Emanuel in 1922. During the Shoah the complete family was killed by the nazi’s.

Philippus de Groot was a vendor of ladies and gents cloth. In December 1922 he obtained a permit to sell his cloth on the streetmarket “Over het IJ”. Before Philippus married Berdina de Vries, he lived at Steenwijkerwold but moved to Amsterdam on 15 October 1917. After having resided at various addresses there, they moved 4 July 1938 to St. Antoniebreestraart 35.

Presumably both their children Roosje and Emanuel de Groot responded to the call for work expansion in Germany. Botgh were registered in Westerbork on 18 July 1942 and put on transport to Auschwitz on 24 July. What kind of labor they had to do after their arrival in Auschwitz is not known, nor the exact date of death and how they lost their life. Therefore, on order by the Ministry of Justice a certificate of death has drawn up in the Municipality of Amsterdam after the war, in which both their date of death and place has been established as on 30 September 1942 in Auschwitz.

Berdina and Philippus were arrested and carried off from there Amsterdam address to Westerbork during the big raids of early October 1942 in Amsterdam. They arrived in Westerbork on 3 October 1942 but already two days later, deported on 5 October to Auschwitz. On arrival there on 8 October 1942 both were there immediately killed.
