Abraham Roos' failed escape to Switzerland

Abraham Roos left the Netherlands for France in July 1942. He tried to escape to Switzerland through the mountains of Haute-Savoie on November 21, 1942, together with two friends from Amsterdam, Johan Kaufman (1918) and Maurice Boërs (1922).

The three of them were sent back by the Swiss border guards at Trient (Switzerland) and soon arrested by the French gendarmes of Vallorcine.

He later got free and went to live in Pau (Basses-Pyrénées), probably with some relatives from Germany, Ernst Roos and Jenny née Rawicz. He was arrested in Pau and sent to Mérignac camp near Bordeaux, before being sent to Drancy and then deported to Auschwitz in convoy 64.

Both Johan Kaufman and Maurice Boërs successfully managed to enter Switzerland at a second occasion in 1943.
