Bernard Sanders was a son of Jochem Sanders and Mathilde Themans. He married in Amsterdam on 14 May 1937 to Josine Caroline Felicia Hijmans. He had another brother Gerard as he was known by his nickname.

Bernard Sanders and his wife were visiting the Wijler family in Ruurlo, when in the early morning of 8 October 1941 he and Salomon Wijler were arrested during a raid by the SD. Bernard Sanders died in the Mauthausen.
