Asser de Haan was born on 10 November 1893 in Amsterdam as a son of Daniel de Haan and Gijsina Bonettenmaker. That family consisted of father, mother and six sons: Abraham, Emanuel, Simon, Meijer, Asser, Jacob and Isaac. Meijer died already as a child of 6 years old in Amsterdam. Suzanna de Haan was the second daughter of Asser de Haan and Rosa Vos. Both her parents were born in Amsterdam, but Suzanna was born in Antwerp on 13 July 1925 and lived there till 1941. Her father started working as diamond worker and as a diamond merchant he had his own business in Antwerp. Suzanna was also working as a diamond worker. Asser de Haan and his family

On 14 May 1940 the De Haan family fled to Southern France. After the capitulation of France on 22 June 1940, the family repatriated to Antwerp. On 24 March 1941 they were unsubscribed from the Peoples Registry Lange van Ruusbroeckstraat 88 in Antwerp to Plantage Kerklaan 14 in Amsterdam.
