Illustration by Christa Pantow By: Daniël Metz

Camp Stories is dedicated to English speaking children and grandchildren of WW II survivors in South East Asia. This war ended 65 years ago. Marianne was 8 years when she became a prisoner of war.

The happy childhood of Marianne Bruinvels-Bakker ends in 1942, when the Japanese invade Java. In simple words Marianne tells about fear, imprisonment and starvation. This is a true story of a young Jewish girl trying to survive the Japanese occupation under the tropical sun. These touching stories can be read separately or as a complete book. They are suitable for children over the age of ten and their parents. 65 Years later, Marianne dedicates these stories to English speaking children and grandchildren of WW II survivors.

Fragment from Camp Stories:
“…In the corner, almost opposite Marianne’s bunk, a large, Caribbean woman spread her mattress. She was called Nurse Astrid and immediately after she had seen Marianne and her festering sores she went over to speak to Marianne’s mother. She whispered something into her ear. The next morning, Marianne’s mother told her to visit Nurse Astrid very quietly. “Do not tell the others!” she hissed urgently. As it turned out, Nurse Astrid was still in the possession of some medicines. Very quietly, she put a small pill into Marianne’s palm and shoved her off. Marianne’s mother had some water ready for her to swallow the pill with. After a week of this hush-hush procedure, Marianne’s sores started to heal…”
