About Emma van Essen-Frankenstein

On 14 September 1942, Emma van Essen-Frankenstein left for Amsterdam, probably under Nazi orders. There, on 5 December 1942, at the age of 80, she took her own life.

After the war, Emma van Essen-Frankenstein was reburied in the Jewish cemetery at the Parallelweg in Veenendaal. The tombstone also remembers her deported husband Abraham Levy van Essen.

Abraham Levie van Essen and his family

Abraham Levie van Essen (nickname Bram) was one of the ten children of Levy Nathan van Essen and Betje van Creveld. Together with his brother Simon Levy van Essen, he headed a large wholesale business in colonial goods, based in the Hoofdstraat in Veenendaal. Abraham Levy van Essen married Emma Frankenstein. They became parents to Leendert Hermann van Essen.
