Biography

About Marcus Italiaander and his wife Rachel Sarfatij.

Marcus Italiaander was born on 17 October 1879 in Monnikendam as son of Jacob Italiaander and Sara Nassanowicz. On 18 June 1902 he married in Weesp the 28-year olf Rachel Sarfatij from Amsterdam, a daughter of Isaac Sarfatij and Rebekka Polk. The couple had three children, namely Rebekka, Isidor and a little son Jacob, who died only one month old on 25 December 1905.

Marcus Italiaander was a pastry chef by trade. After his wedding in 1902 to Rachel Sarfatij, they lived at Waterlooplein 32, from July 1908 at Iepenweg 32 and since June 1912 at Iepenplein 18. Early 1930 they moved to Van Musschenbroekstraat 1a, were then also the confectionery was located. However, per April 1937 Marcus and Rachel moved to Naarden, but returned 3 July 1940 in Amsterdam again, where they came living at Waalstraat 34.

Per 30 July 1942, the confectionery/bakery at Van Musschenbroekstraat was designated as a “Joods Lokaal”, a Jewish Business, where daughter-in-law Esther Italiaander-Stad worked; Therefor she had a “Sperre”, an exemption from deportation “for the time being” and also her children. Marcus Italiaander had no exemption but was “temporary employee” at the Jewish Council in the department bread distribution and food preparing.

On 25 May 1943, during a big round-up in Amsterdam, Marcus Italiaander and his wife Rachel Sarfatij were arrested and carried off to Westerbork. There they stayed in barrack 62 till 1 June, when they were deported to Sobibor. On arrival there on 4 June 1942 they were both immediately murdered.
