About Samuel Cauveren.

Samuel Cauveren, born 10 January 1894 in Amsterdam was a son of Samson Cauveren and his first wife Henriette Saphier. He had an elder brother Hartog, who survived the war and a sister Vrouwtje, who was killed in Auschwitz. His father Samson passed away in Amsterdam in 1941 and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery in Diemen; his mother died already in 1912 in Antwerp and she was interred in the Jewish Cemetery in Putte.

Samuel married in Amsterdam Johanna Elisabeth Alida van Nes on 25 November 1919, a daughter of Arij van Nes and Alida Oosterhof. Johanna was previously married and divorced from Gustaaf Albert Sedee. Samuel was a diamond sawyer and diamond trader and he lived with his wife in Antwerp, Bervoetstraat 39. The couple divorced in Amsterdam on 10 January 1924. 

On 13 August 1924, Samuel Cauveren remarried in Antwerp with Sara Saphier, born 21 August 1890 in Amsterdam, a daughter of Abraham Saphier and Mietje Mulder. She too was previously married to Samuel Adelaar and had with him three children. Before the divorce was made official on 23 February 1923, she has left Amsterdam for Antwerp with her son Joseph Adelaar and lived there at Miclystraat 10. After the wedding of Samuel Cauveren and Sara Saphier, the went living at Hovenierstraat 46 in Antwerp.

Sara Saphier survived the Holocaustf and passed away in 1969 in Mortsel in Belgium and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery in Putte. Samuel Cauveren however has been carried off at some point to Auschwitz; research made clear that he wasn’t deported from Mechelen or from Drancy in France of from Westerbork. But in the Dossiers of Foreigners of the City of Antwerp no. 178920 his certificate of death has been included, made out by the City of Antwerp in 1953, no. B211, stating that he died in Auschwitz at an unknown day in the month of February of 1944.
