About Max Knoop

Max Knoop had been set to work in Drenthe in 1941. He was sent to Westerbork and from there to various other camps. When the Russian armies were advancing towards the camp in which Max Knoop was interned in 1945, those in charge of the camp decided to evacuate it. The prisoners who were still able to walk(including Max Knoop) were forced to go on a death march.
On 28 April 1945, Max Knoop was murdered during this death march. Because he and two fellow-prisoners were no longer able to aid eachother in walking, straws were drawn. Max Knoop drew the shortest straw and was shot dead on the spot by a guard.
