Hartog Pool was a son of Mozes Simon Pool and Leentje de Vries. He was one of the six children in that family. Three of these children died before the war. Two brothers of Hartog Pool did not survive the Holocaust: Simon and Gottfried.
Hartog married in Amsterdam on 22 August 1907 to Roosje van de Kar, daughter of Eliazer van de Kar and Eva Drukker. The couple had three children: Maurits, Evaline and Helena. Two of their children survived the Holocaust. One was married to a non-Jewish spouse, the other went into hiding.
