Bernard Perel wrote this postcard to Willem Hofkamp (born in 1884) and Maria Hofkamp-Strauss (born in 1877) who lived in the street where Bernard and his wife Anna used to live before they were deported to Westerbork on November 21st, 1942.

Beste vrienden. Nu er gelegenheid is even een praatje. De gezondheidstoestand van de wederhelft is iets gunstiger. De stemming is een weinig beter, en minder neerslachtig. Lichamelijk is de toestand niet veel veranderd. Ook de nervositeit houdt aan. Doch als geheel is het meegevallen. Het gaat alles zijn gangetje. Ik zou graag nog een paar medicijnen ontvangen: pettoral (bij Jan Sol) hoestpoeders en stoppoeders (Dunnebier) en zoo mogelijk nitrobat tabletten. (Sol) en speciaal Valeriaan (Dunnebier). Wellicht geeft de laatste een tube tandpasta ondanks het feit dat ik geen oude tube kan zenden. Ik kon nu weer op levensmiddelen: vooral brood en alles wat voedsel is, geen gort of peulvruchten, tenzij in gekookte vorm. Alles is overigens welkom en wordt in dank aanvaard. De pakketten – goed en stevig verpakt – worden het best verzonden per post, “aangetekend” en dienen voorloopig naar mij “barak 69” te worden geadresseerd. De kosten te regelen met Nannie. Hoe gaat het met U allen en met de straatgenooten. Ons contact met allen bleef tot dusver goed onderhouden, en daar ben ik blij om. We weten heusch niet, hoe we dit meeleven laten kunnen reciprocheren. Doch ook dit komt t.z.t. terecht. Er is geen aanleiding om mismoedig te zijn en dat houdt ons boven water, al gaat het mij gemakkelijker af dan mijn vrouw. Intusschen met beste groet voor gedrieën, A.P.

Dear friends. Now there's opportunity for a little chat. The state of health of the other half is slightly better. The mood is a little better, and less depressed. Physically, the condition hasn't changed much. Also the nervousness persists. But as a whole it is not so bad. Everything is going well. I would like to receive some more medication: pettoral (by Jan Sol) cough powders and stop powders (Dunnebier) and if possible nitrobat tablets. (Sol) and especially Valerian (Dunnebier). Maybe the latter gives a tube of toothpaste despite the fact that I can't send an old tube. I could now go on food again: especially bread and everything that is food, no groats or legumes, unless in cooked form. Everything is welcome by the way and is accepted in thanks. The parcels - well and firmly packed - are best sent by post, "registered" and should be addressed to me in advance "barrack 69". The costs to be settled with Nannie. How are you all doing and with the street mates. Our contact with all of them has been good so far, and I'm glad about that. We don't know how to reciprocate. But this too will come to pass in due course. There is no reason to be despondent and that keeps us above water, although it is easier for me than for my wife.
