Door: Sjenitzer

Bruno Ucko was born on the 3th of December 1906 in Koenigsberg/ Prussia in Germany..His brother Henry Ucko was born as Heinz Zvi Ucko on 13th of May 1910 They were sons of Meir and Gittel Ucko. In 1936 Bruno had to leave the country after he had been warned he was on the Gestapo’s arrest list. He found asylum in Holland.
In 1939 his brother Henry and his friend took the train to Holland to get there a boat to the Dominican republic , and visited Bruno who in the meantime had settled and found himself a nice Dutch non-Jewish girlfriend, Tilly la Croix. That’s probably the reason why Bruno didn’t join them to the Dominican Republic. Bruno was a professional opera singer and gave concerts. Henry Ucko's widow Lenora Ucko told the story that after the Germans had conquered Holland and had started to round up the Jews he hid in the apartment of the parents of his girlfriend in Amsterdam. After a while he got worried he was thus endangering their lives and reported himself.
He was taken to Westerbork on 26-05-1943, and was sent on transport to Sobibor on the 1st of June where he was directly killed on the 4th of June 1943. After the war Heinz and Bruno’s girlfriend would make great efforts to find out what had happened to him.
