Verhaal

G.D. Fresco Wildschut spouse Louis Fresco

Door: Roni Thome

Louis Fresco was married to Gerda Douwina Fresco Wildschut. After their marriage (I suppose at the end of the ’30) they had lived in the Pastoor Warande (directly behind the Toren Garage) in the old centre of The Hague. Louis and his wife had together two children: Louis junior (born 1940) and Aaron (born 1942). Louis Fresco was capture by the Germans in the street and vanished. His wife Gerda (she had called herself Corrie, because she didn’t like her name) had been looking for him, day by day, for a very long time. She had visited every Gestapo or other German authority office in order to locate her husband and bring him back home. All in vain. The German had played the game very well. They had showed her pictures of men who had no resemblance in age and looks with her husband. After a time, she understood that her efforts would not bring husband Louis back home.
She had started than a new project: Play with the Germans ‘the same way they played with others’. She had started to hide Jews in her home. Despite of the fact, her house was tiny and she had to take care of her two little children. It was very risky as for the ‘Toren Garage’ was full of Wehrmacht soldiers. She had done it even during the so called ‘Honger Winter’ in the winter of 1944 1945. She had several Jewish hiders in different periods. My mother was hiding their from the approximately mid 1943 till the end of the war in 5th May 1945.
