Sali was a German refugee. Since January 16th, 1931 he lived in the orphanage in Frankfurt am Main: his father Ze'ev, who was born in 1891, passed away on May 29th, 1930. His mother's name was Clara (Keila) Diamant: she was born in 1892.
Sali was taken in by he Portuguese Orphanage of Amsterdam on November 22nd, 1938.
