Biography

About Elisabeth van Zuiden-Jacobs and her daughtger Serli Johanna van Zuiden.

Widowed from Eliazer van Zuiden since 1909.

Elisabeth Jacobs was a daughter of Alexander Jacobs and Johanna Fortuin. She was born in Zwolle on 15 March 1873 and married there Eliazer van Zuiden on 21 October 1895, who was born in Meppel on 10 May 1868 as a son of Meijer van Zuiden and Sara Kan. The couple had a daughter on 12 March 1898 named Serli Johanna.

However, Eliazer van Zuiden passed away at the age of 40 on 11 March 1909 and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery there. His widow and daughter remained living in Meppel but on 28 April 1922 they moved to Rijswijksestraat 470 in Den Haag. On 12 July 1939 a relocation followed to De Carpentierstraat 190, located at Bezuidenhout-Midden and at the time of the compulsory registration of all the Jews in the Netherlands since January 1941, they moved again, to Voorburg to the Van de Wateringlaan 194.

On that address, Elisabeth van Zuiden-Jacobs passed away on 10 June 1941 and the still unmarried Serli Johanna van Zuiden left at some point Voorburg for Amsterdam to her aunt Sara van Huiden, who lived in the Gerard Terborgstraat 34 1st floor. Most likely “she had violated regulations by changing her place of residence without permission” and was arrested in Amsterdam together with her aunt Sara and they both ended up in Scheveningen (Oranjehotel) (prison).

The transportlist from Scheveningen to Lager Westerbork of 2 September 1942 shows that Sara van Zuiden-van Huiden was listed as residing at her official addres at Gerard Terborgstraat 34 in Amsterdam and Serli Johanna van Zuiden as residing at Van de Wateringlaan 194 in Voorburg. Upon arrival in Westerbork that 2nd Sepember, they were both imprisoned in the penal barrack 67, waiting for their deportation.

On 7 September 1943 Sara van Zuiden-van Huiden and Serli Johanna van Zuiden were put on transport to Auschwitz and on arrival there on 10 September 1943 immediately murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
