Biography

About Schoontje Vos, her children Eva, Maurits and Bejamin Juda and her spouse Jacob Zomerplaag.

Schoontje Vos, a daughter of Mozes Vos and Maria Polak, was married in Amsterdam on 27 December 1923 to the briljant cutter Jacob Zomerplaag. He was born on 18 October 1889 in Amsterdam as son of Juda Zomerplaag and Eva Mechanicus. His wife Schoontje Vos was born on 27 August 1892 in Amsterdam. The couple had three children, namely Eva in 1924 in Antwerp, Maurits in 1928 in Deurne (Belgium) and Benjamin Juda in 1931, also in Deurne (B).

Before Jacob Zomerplaag got married in December 1923, he stayed already since 27 May 1923 in Berchem in the Fourneaustraat 54. After his wedding to Schoontje Vos, they lived in 1924 in the Boomgaardstraat 199 in Antwerp and later in Deurne (B) in the Van Steenlantstraat 41, where then also Schoontjes unmarried sister Henriette has lived in.

On 27 November 1933 the Zomerplaag family returned to Amsterdam. Sister-in-law Henriette left already earlier for Amsterdam. Jacob Zomerplaag then moved in Amsterdam into a house in the Dani Theronstraat 34 and in June 1934 they moved to Batavierstraat 32. However on 23 March 1937 Jacob Zomerplaag passed away at the age of 47 years. He was interred in the Jewish Cemetery in Diemen.

On 26 July 1937 the widowed Schoontje Zomerplaag-Vos and her three children moved to Borssenburgstraat 16 2nd floor in Amsterdam, which would became also their last known address in this city. From documents of the file cabinet of the Jewish Council, it appeared that Schoontje has worked and stayed at the Sint Willibrordusstraat 8 in Amsterdam; at this address also the N.V. Amsterdamsche Confectiefabriek from R. Doyes was located there. (a clothing factory).

However, on 1 April 1943, Schoontje Zomerplaag and her sons Maurits and Bejamin Juda were taken and carried off to concentration camp Vught, where Schoontje had to work as a seamstress and they had to stay there till their transfer to Westerbork on 24 May 1943. There they had to stay in barrack 61. Already the next day, on 25 May they were put on transport to Sobibor and upon arrival there on 28 May 1943 immediately murdered in the gas chambers there.

Schoontje’s  daughter Eva has managed to get a “Sperre” from the Jewish Council. She was a “servant in the eatery of An Thal in the Kromme Mijdrechtstraat” and was exempted from deportation for the time being. But she too could not avoid her fate: on 25 May 1943 during the large scale raid in Amsterdam she was arrested and carried off to Westerbork and deported to Sobibor on 1 June. There upon arrival on 4 June 1943, she too was immediately killed in the gas chambers.
