Biography

About Salomon Noord and his family.

Salomon Noord, born 7 November 1894 in Amsterdam, was a son of Marcus Noord and Esther Lopes Salzedo. He married Leentje Spreekmeester in Amsterdam on 16 March 1927, a daughter of Eliazer Spreekmeester and Rebecca Baruch. The couple had three children, namely Esther in 1931, Marcus in 1935 and Eliazer in 1937.

At the time of his wedding, Salomon Noord was a fruiterer, however in 1941 he was registered as a baker. After their marriage, the couple lived at Vrolikstraat 367 in Amsterdam but in February 1938, the family moved to Gerard Doustraat 192 3rd floor. The marriage however did not last and ended in a divorce on 30 January 1941. Salomon then lived on his own in the President Steynstraat 11 ground floor in Amsterdam-East; his children stayed with their mother and lived at Blasiusstraat 67 1st floor in Amsterdam.

Leentje Spreekmeester and her youngest son Eliazer Noord have survived the Holocaust. The other two children, the 12-year old Esther and the 8-year old Marcus, were carried off 29 May 1943 to Westerbork and they ended up together in barrack 64. They have been put on transport to Auschwitz on 31 August and on arrival there on 3 September 1943 immediately killed.

Already one year earlier, on 4 August 1942, their father Salomon Noord has been carried off to Westerbork and deported to Auschwitz on 7 August. On arrival there on 10 August 1942, Salomon was selected to perform “labor”, in or outside the camp. It is not known on what day exactly Salomon Noord lost his life there. Commissioned by the Dutch Ministery of Justice, the municipality of Amsterdam has drawn up a death certificate for Salomon Noord after the war, win which the date and place of death is determined as on 30 September 1942 in Auschwitz.
