Biography

About Jozef Karafiol and his family.

Jozef Karafiol, born in 1882 and originative from Lukon in Poland or Russia. Before 1935 he came to the Netherlands with his family and lived at first in Diemen, but on 30 December 1935, the family was registered at the address Stadionweg 45 2nd floor in Amsterdam.

Jozef Karifiol was married, presumably in Warsaw at the end of 1903 or early 1904, to Minka Tenenbaum and he had with her four children, namely Pinchas, born 5 March 1905 in Warsaw; Rosa, born 18 February 1908 in Warsaw; Ida Regina, born 4 March 1911 in Plaueen (Germany) and Sabina, who was born 16 December 1915 in Düsseldorf.

Pinchas Karafiol married 15 May 1940 in Amsterdam Alette Henriette Krammer, (usually called Letty), a daughter of Salomon Krammer from Friesland and Betje Druijf from Groningen. That date, he moved with his wife to Beethovenstraat 96 1st floor and 27 August 1941 again to Olympiaplein 101 1st floor. Both have survived the Holocaust and in 1948 their daughter Betty Marion was born.

Rosa Karafiol married 18 February 1931 in Wuppertal Ernst Adam, born 11 February 1897 in Berlin as son of Heinrich Adam and Therese Cohn. The couple had a daughter born in Wuppertal on 10 June 1932, named Felicitas (Fay). Before 1936 the family came to Holland and lived in Diemen. Per 6 June 1936 they were registered at the address Parnassusweg 30 2nd floor in Amsterdam.

The marriage however ended by a divorce, which has been registered in the Register of Marriages and Divorces in Den Haag on 14 July 1942. Rosa had again a daughter: on 6 June 1943 Susanna was born, who received the family name Walzer after the war.

Rosa and both her daughters survived the Holocaust. In 1940 she married Leib Walzer from Przeworsk (Poland). At that date, Susanna Karafiol, who had received the family name of Walzer, has been subscribed from the Peoples Registry in Amsterdam to the USA. Her half-sister Felicitgas was already emigrated to the USA in 1947. Leib Walzer died 27 October 1971 in Amsterdam en Rosa Karafiol passed away 27 August 1991 in Amstelveen.

After the divorce, Rosa’s ex-husband Ernst Adam moved in August 1942 to Dongestraat 15 2nd floor in Amsterdam. From there he was carried off to Westerbork and stayed in barrack 83 and 22. On 24 November 1942 Ernst Adam was deported to Auschwitz but he lost his life eventually 31 March 1944 in Mid Europe.

Of Sabina Karafiol is only known that she too has survived the Holocaust.

Ida Regina Karafiol is the only one of the four children, who has been killed in the Shoah. She still lived at home with her parents at Stadionweg 45 2nd floor. Per 5 January 1943 she was registered as cutter in a ready-made-clothing factory. Ida Regina was carried off to concentration camp Vught in the first months of 1943. From there, she has been deported with the so-called childrens-transport in the night of 6/7 May 1943 to  Westerbork but she was put on transport to Sobibor only the 8th of June. On arrival there 11 June 1943, she was immediately killed.

Jozef and Minka Karafiol were carried off 5 May 1943 from their home Stadionweg 45 to Westerbork where they had to stay in barrack 55 and in June transferred to barack 80. On 6 July they were deported to Sobibor and on arrival there 9 July 1943 immediately killed.
