Biography

About Joseph Leidensdorff, his wife Kitty Mock and his children Sara and Isaac Leidensdorff.

Joseph Leidensdorff, a son of Meijer Leidensdorff and Clara Hammelburg, married 4 Mei 1910 in Zaandam Kitty Mock, who was born 1876 in London as daughter of Isaac Hartog Mock and Fokje Crost. The couple had two children: Sara and Isaac.

After their marriage, the couple Joseph Leidensdorff lived at Haarlemmerstraat 50 in Amsterdam, where in March 1911 their daughter Sara and in January 1913 their son Isaac was born. 3 July 1913 the family moved to Nieuwe Kerkstraat 27 and 5 February 1914 to St. Antoniebreestraat 66. Later on, the family stayed for some time in Antwerp but 22 September 1919 they were registered again in Amsterdam at Gerard Doustraat 111. There Joseph had a shop in radio and electricity supplies.

Joseph Leidensdorff was born into a family with five children, of whom only his brother Hessel survived the Shoah. The other siblings, namely Keetje, Rachel, Abraham and Joseph self were killed during the Holocaust. His mother Clara Hammelburg was killed in Auschwitz 12 February 1943; Joseph’s father Meijer Leidensdorff passed away in Amsterdam already 16 February 1919 and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery at Muiderberg.

Sara Leidensdorff, the daughter of Joseph and Kitty, married 31 October 1934 Isaac Fredrikstadt, a son of Meijer Fredrikstadt and Grietje Blog. They lived at Boterdiepstraat 23 in Amsterdam but moved 8 May 1937 to Holendrechtstraat 18 down floor. Later, they left Amsterdam for Antwerp and they were both deported from Mechelen with Convoy 21 from 31 July 1943 to Auschwitz. On arrival there 3 August 1942 Sara Leidensdorff and Isaac Fredrikstadt have been immediately killed.

Isaac, the son of Joseph and Kitty left Amsterdam for Antwerp again in 1937 where he lived at Grammestraat 32 in Deurne. He was a diamondpolisher and was married in Amsterdam 3 July 1940 to Sara Neuburger. Since their marriage, they lived still shortly in Amsterdam and left again for Antwerp. As far as known, Isaac and Sara had no children.

Sara Leidensdorff-Neuburger too was deported from Mechelen to Auschwitz with Convoy 21 that 31 July 1943. She too was killed on arrival there 3 August 1942. Her husband, Isaac Leidensdorff survived the Holocaust; he remarried Gertrudis Nijs and had three children with her. Isaac Leidensdorff passed away in Brussels 26 November 1982.

In October 1942 Joseph Leidensdorff was deported to Westerbork, from where he was put on transport to Auschwitz 19 October. On arrival there, 22 October 1942 he was immediately killed.

His wife Kitty Mock was carried off to Weserbork 10 December 1942 and deported to Auschwitz 18 January 1943. On arrival there 21 January 1943, Kitty Leidensdorff-Mock has been immediately killed.
