Biography

About Grietje Gaarkeuken and her husband Israël Carwalho.

Grietje Gaarkeuken, daughter of Wolf Gaarkeuken and Marianne Keizer, married 4 January 1922 in Amsterdam Israël Carwalho, a son of Isaac Carwalho and Ester Bosboom. In 1922 their son Isaac was born, who has survived the war. In the beginning the family lived in Amsterdam but was registered in the Municipal Registry of Den Haag per 8 January 1935, where they started at Gedempte Gracht 33 and per 30 March 1938 moved to Grote Markt 27 in Den Haag. Their last address was Bosschestraat 10 at Scheveningen. The 2nd half of 1942, both were sent from there to Camp Westrbork where they stayed in barack 37. 16 November they were both deported to Auschwitz and upon arrival there 9 November 1942, immediately killed.

Their son Isaac, who was born 1922 in Amsterdam, has survived the war. He was previously married to Theodora Anna Catharina van Reysen and after his divorce, he married Helena Catharina Brander, with whom he had a son, who died only 5 months old. She became widowed as her husband Isaac Carwalho passed away in his residence in Hilversum 16 July 1951, just 28 years of age.
