About Salomon Gaarkeuken and his wife Grietje Beem

Salomon Gaarkeuken was a son of Magiel Gaarkeuken and Grietje van Hessen. 2 December 1914 he married in Haarlem Grietje Beem from Elburg, a daughter of David Ezechiël Beem and Roossien (Roosje) West. As far as known Salomon and Grietje had two children: Magiel, born 8 July 1916 and Martha, born 27 March 1922. Their son Machiel was registered per 9 September 1919 as inhabitant of the psychiatric institution "Het Apeldoornse Bos" in Apeldoorn. Magiel resided there till the moment the institution was "emptied" by the Germans 23 January 1943 and everybody including staf was deported to Auschwitz. He was killed in Auschwitz 25 January 1943. Their daughter Martha went into hiding and survived the Holocaust. She deceased unmarried in Haarlem in 1974 and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery Amsterdamse Vaart in Haarlem.

Salomon was born into a family with eleven children in total. However, three children were stillborn, in 1872, 1873 and 1875. A baby-son Izaak died in 1874, six months old. Two daughters, namely Roosje and Naatje and a son Marcus have died already before the war (resp. 1937, 1934 and 1926) and one son, Simon, died in Haarlem during the war. Three children Gaarkeuken were killed in the Shoah: Salomon self, his sister Elisabeth and brother Wolf.

Salomon Gaarkeuken, merchant, and his wife Grietje Beem lived in Haarlem at Grote Markt 31. It was their residence till the moment they were sent to Camp Westerbork 26 Augustus 1942. Two days later, 28 August, both were deported to Auschwitz and upon arrival there 31 August 1942 immediately killed.
