About Klara Nathans

Klara Nathans was a daughter of Simon Nathans, merchant and cafe owner at Haren (province of Groningen), and Betje de Jong. She married 23 August 1905 in Haren Salomo Polak, an office clerk from Hoogeveen and a son of Simon Polak and Bettje van Rhijn. The couple had four children, namely Bettje (Betty), Simon and the twinsisters Betsy Aaltje (Bep) and Carolina Bertha(Lineke). Klara's son Simon was killed on 13 May 1940 in the Battle of the Grebbeberg; her daughter Lineke died in 1930, only 12 years old but her twinsister Bep has been killed in Auschwitz.

Klara and her husband Salomo arrived at Camp Westerbork in the early days of October 1942 and stayed in barack 60. There have been made serious efforts to effectuate the release of Klara and Salomo but without any result. On 21 November 1942 both were deported to Auschwitz were they were killed on 5 November 1942.

Klara's parents had eight children in total. They were Aaltje, Nathan, Salomon David, Sophia, Eva, David Simon, Anna and Klara self. Only her brother Nathan passed away already rather young: he died in 1913, 27 years old. All other siblings have been killed in the Shoah.
