Rudolf Loewenthal was married to Laura Wilhelmine Ostermann. He was a physician and a health inspector in Magdeburg (Germany). He and his spouse could not obtain immigration papers for the USA, even though they did travel there on a visitor's visa. They had a child who already lived there with its family and survived the war.
