Israël van Voolen was the son of Mozes David van Voolen and Rachel Keesing. He had two sisters: Elisabeth and Sara and three brothers: David, Gerrit en Gompert.

Until 1936 Israel van Voolen was married to Flora Kan. In 1936 he became a widower. Dina Eschwege was his second wife. He had a son Maurits and one child that survived the war.
