Leonardus Groen was the ninth child of Israel Groen and Schoontje van Limburg. In 1902 he departed to Delft and in 1915 he came back to The Hague from Hamburg. The same year he married Judith Vet. He was a merchant at that time. Later he ran a pawnshop. After their marriage Leonardus and Judith established themselves in Rotterdam.
