Machiel Swaab was a son of Samuel Swaab and Rachel Cohen. He married for the first time on 11 March 1920 in Amsterdam to Duifje Brilleslijper. They divorced on 18 March 1940. Machiel had a son Samuel from that marriage. On 24 July 1940 he married for the second time to Rebecca Schaap, (a daughter of Gompel Wolf Schaap and Hendrina Walvisch), who has survived the Holocaust.
