Hedwig Levy was the daughter of Max Mayer Levy and Emma Mildenberg. The family lived in Mainz, where Hedwig attended the Höhere Mädchenschule (now named Frauenlob-Gymnasium) from 1899 till 1901. Her name is listed in preserved records of the former students. Later the family moved to Darmstadt.
