As far as is known, Salomon Szapse Schachner was a young businessman who understood his profession. Salomon spent his youth in Poland. He grew up in a middle class environment as the son of Jente Berglas and Abraham Saul Schachner. Salomon was most likely their only child. At the age of 15, Salomon moved to Vienna to live with his uncle and aunt. He followed an education to become a shoemaker. His uncle, who was a shoe manufacturer, taught him on a daily basis everything that had to do with manufacturing shoes and selling them. Later Salomon had one or more businesses with his uncle and after that he owned his own shops and a shoe factory. These businesses were housed at different addresses throughout Vienna.
Salomon met his wife Rachel when she spent a holiday in Vienna. On 23 May 1937 they got married in Vienna in the synagogue in the Leopoldsgasse. In January 1939 Rachel and Salomon escaped to the Netherlands. Rachel first lived with her foster-parents while Salomon went to live in Haarlem.
In 1940, all the Jews had to leave the coastal areas and that’s why Salomon moved to Arnhem where Rachel joined him. In 1942 they moved to Amsterdam. They both had many jobs and lived at many different addresses. In 1942 their child was born. In May 1943 Salomon was arrested and deported to Vught. Rachel had her child hidden with friends and followed Salomon to Vught. On 15 November that same year, both Salomon and his wife Rachel were deported to Auschwitz via Westerbork. On 31 January 1944 they were killed in Auschwitz.
Rachel and Salomon continue to exist in their child, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
