Alex Meijler had gone into hiding with his sister and grandmother in a welcoming home in Leiden. He felt restless and did not wish to sit idly by while others risked their lives for him, and he decided to join the resistance.
This was too dangerous for his host family's taste, and he found another place to go into hiding.
He was arrested there on 10 March 1945. Lex tried to flee through the garden doors but was captured by the german soldiers who had surrounded the house.
After the war, a Canadian airman who has remained anonymous commissioned a plaque in Alex Meijler’s memory. At the request of this Canadian donor, the plaque was placed in the Juliana Kinderziekenhuis, a children’s hospital in The Hague which had just opened at the time. This hospital later became part of the Hagaziekenhuis, and the old building was demolished. No new location has yet been provided for the plaque.

Alex Meijler was unmarried. He lived in Noordwijk. He used to help out people going into hiding. On 10 March 1945, he was picked up in Leiden and detained in the penal prison of Scheveningen (Oranjehotel). In retaliation for the attack on Police Major Tetenburg, he was executed on 3 April 1945 at the Lage Oostzeedijk in Rotterdam.
