Herbert Hans Elzas joined the Zutphen chess club in October 1925. He came in first in Group IV at the national competition in Zutphen in December 1934.
In May 1940 he was a reserve officer candidate in the battles on the Grebbeberg. He and his family were deported to Sobibor via Westerbork.
