Ruben Speijer and his family

Rupen Speijer, son of the cigar maker Joseph Speijer and Vogeltje de Zwarte, married Betsie Scheffer, a seamstress and needlewoman and the daughter of Salomon Scheffer and Rosetta Victoria Levitus, on 10 April 1935. The couple lived at 7 Reitzstraat in Amsterdam. Ruben Speijer was an upholsterer. The couple had three children: Flora, Sally and Joseph.

Early in the morning of Saturday, 3 October 1942, the family was removed from their home and deported to Auschwitz via Westerbork. Betsie and the children were killed upon arrival. Ruben was selected for forced labour; he was killed at the infirmary in Auschwitz.
