The labourer Emanuel van der Bijl, son of Joseph van der Bijl and Rachel Agsteribbe, married Emma Swart, the eldest of the nine children of Levie Swart and Frouwke Kropveld, on 5 September 1923. He and his wife had three children: Rachel, Frouwke and Samson.
When the war started, Emanuel van der Bijl was a widower; his wife Emma had died in Amsterdam on 15 November 1927.
Copies remain of the marriage certificate of Emanuel van der Bijl and Emma Swart and of the birth certificates of Emma Swart, Rachel van der Bijl and Samson van der Bijl.
