Biography

About Hijman de Swarte, his second wife Leentje Vogel and their three children.

(Salomon Vogel & Max and Anna de Swarte).

After the divorce of Hijman de Swarte from Louise van Dal on 30 May 1930, the 54-year-old Hijman only officially married the 26-year-old Leentje Vogel on 18 June 1941. However, already on 15 January 1935, their son Salomon was born, who was given the name of his mother: Vogel.

When Hijman married Leentje in 1941, possibly for security reasons, Salomon was not recognized as the son of Hijman de Swarte: he therefore kept the family name Vogel, although Hijman was the biological father. After the marriage two more children were born, Max on 15 December 1941 and Anna on 25 January 1943.

The De Swarte-Vogel family lived at Markensteeg 11 1st floor in the old Jewish neighbourhood of Amsterdam They were registered in Westerbork on 6 April 1943 and deported to Sobibor on 8 June. On arrival there on 11 June 1943, Hijman de Swarte, his wife Leentje de Swarte-Vogel and the children Salomon Vogel and Max and Anna de Swarte were immediately murdered in the gas chambers.
