Biography

About Barend van West, his wife Betje Lelie and their children Salomon and Vogelina.

Barend van West, a son of Salomon van West (1856) and Betje Lelie (1853), was born in Amsterdam on 26 August 1881. He married in Weesp Betje Lelie on 25 October 1906, who was born on 20 June 1879 in Amsterdam as a daughter of Levie Salomon Lelie and Sara Fles. The couple had four children, viz. Salomon in 1907, Selma in 1910, who however died already in 1912, Selma Lea in 1913 and Vogelina in 1914. Barend and Betje lived at Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 42, where he had a flower shop.

After the passing of Selma in 1912, on 11 October 1913 again a daughter was born, named Selma Lea. She was still unmarried in 1941 when she has given birth to a son Felix Bernhard van West at the age of 28 years, but both have survived the Holocaust. Selma Lea lived in July 1945 at Lange Leidschedwarsstraat in Amsterdam and married in 1952 Karel Wilhelm Stemmerik, born in 1903 in Amsterdam.

Both other children, Salomon and Vogelina, were employed as office clerk but were admitted in psychiatric institutions later in life. Salomon a few times in the Apeldoornsche Bosch, were he stayed from September 1920 till September 1923, from March 1927 till December 1930. Salomon was admitted again on 8 September 1941.

Vogelina van West was admitted in the Provincial Hospital Meer en Berg where she was nursed and which then was located at Brederodelaan 54 in Bloemendaal. On 4 August 1942, she was transferred to the Apeldoornsche Bosch.

When the Apeldoornsche Bosch was evacuated by the Germans on 22 and 23 January 1943 and all patients and staff were deported to Auschwitz, this fate also befell Salomon and his sister Vogelina. Both were murdered directly in the gas chambers on arrival in Auschwitz on 25 January 1943. 

Barend van West and his wife Betje Lelie were arrested in September 1942 and carried off to Westernbork, from where they have been deported to Auschwitz on 25 September. Upon arrival there, both were immediately murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau on 28 September 1942.
