He had a vibrant personality and was familiar with German culture. Süskind cultivated the trust of Aus der Fünten, the Nazi commander. He also set up a childcare centre across the street to rescue a great many Jewish children. This meant secretly destroying the records of these children.
Walter Süskind was deported from Westerbork to Theresienstadt on 4 September 1944 and from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz on 23 October 1944. He died on a death march in Central Europe in February 1945.
