Biography

The fate of Louis Fuld, his wife Jeannetta de Winter and some of their children.

Louis Fuld was a son of Isaac Fuld and Maria Frisco. He was born in Den Haag on 1 Febuary 1992 and he was owner of a coffee hous; later he earned his living as dealer in irregular goods. He married in Den Haag on 10 Februray 1909 Jeannetta de Winter, who was born in Druten on 1 January 1886 as a daughter of Lazarus de Winter and Eva Boas. The couple moved 25 June 1909 from Den Haag to Rotterdam, where they came to live in the Lange Baanstraat 12a.

In Rotterdam, the Fuld-de Winther couple had ten children, viz Maria Frisco in 1910-1944, Isaäc 1911-1912, Lazarus (Leo) in 1912 who survived the war, Leentje in 1913, survived the war, Eva in 1915-1943, Isaäc in 1916-1918, Naatje in 1918-1942, Isaäc in 1920-1940, Sophia in 1922-1942 en Rebecca in 1923-1942.

Three of their sons were named Isaäc; the first two Isaäcs died already within two years after their births. Isaäc 3 died at the age of 20 in May 1940 in Rotterdam. Lazarus (Leo) and Leentje survived the Holocaust but the other five children were murdered during the Shoah, with or without their families. Mother Jeannetta Fuld-de Winter however passed away still in Den Haag on 30 January 1941.

After the bombardment of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940, when also their residence in the Helmersstraat has been devastated, the still at home living members of the Fuld family moved intoa house at the Naaldwijkschestraat 54 in Den Haag in November 1940, located in the Stations District, nearby the Hoefkade. The family then consisted of father Louis, mother Jeannetta and the still unmarried daughters Naatje, Sophia and Rebecca. Naatje married – probably in Den Haag in 1940; her husband, Levie David de Wolf from Rotterdam, who was born on 11 August 1918 there, joined also the Fuld family and his bride Naatje in November 1940 and came living in at Naaldwijkschestraat 54.

Jeannetta de Winter’s widower, Louis Fuld, was arrested between 3 and 5 October 1942 and carried off to Westerbork. Daughter Naatje, his son-in-law Levie David de Wolf and his grandson Salomon were also arrested at the same time and taken to Westerbork.

Where Naatje, Levie David and Salomon de Wolf were already deported to Auschwitz on 9 October 1942, Louis Fuld stayed another 10 days in Westerbork, which was certainly hard for him: the bombardment and the devastation of his house, the death of his wife, his children taken away, most unknown when and where. On 19 October 1942 Louis Fuld was deported to Auschwitz where he was immediately murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau on arrival there on 22 October 1942.
