Biography

About Salomon Delden, his wife Judith Hofman and their little son Jacob.

Salomon Delden, born on 13 February 1916, was a son of Jacob Delden and Leentje Ossedrijver. He was a telegraph deliverer by trade. On 9 August 1939 he married Judith Hofman in Amsterdam, born on 22 May 1917 as a daughter of David Hofman and Naatje van der Woude. Salomon and Judith had one child together, Jacob, who was born on 8 July 1943.

After the marriage was concluded, Salomon and Judith moved into a house at Reitzstraat 5 2nd floor in Amsterdam-East. Judith Hofman was a seamstress by profession and without an official Sperre she worked as a seamstress at the Jewish Council from 7 May 1943. A few weeks after Jacob's birth in July 1943, the family was taken from home on 7 August and carried off to Vught concentration camp, where they stayed until 15 November 1943.

On 15 November 1943 there was a direct deportation transport from Vught to Auschwitz, containing a total of 1149 victims. On arrival there on 18 November 1943 Salomon Delden was put to work as a forced labourer, but it is unknown what work he had to do and where. His exact date of death is also unknown.

After the war, the Dutch authorities determined, partly on the basis of research and testimonies from survivors, that Salomon Delden no longer could be alive after 31 January 1944. The municipality of Amsterdam was then instructed to draw up a death certificate, in which it is stated that Salomon Delden died on 31 January 1944 in the vicinity of Auschwitz.

Salomon's wife and his son Jacob have both survived the Holocaust. Judith Hofman remarried on 29 June 1946 to Elias Pais and died in 2001 and Jacob in 2017.
