Biography

The fate of Hendrina van Delft & Abraham Cohen.

Married 1 April 1942 - Deportation 21 July 1942; Killed in Auschwitz 30 September 1942.

The eldest daughter of Nathan van Delft and Sophie Henriques de la Fuente was Hendrina van Delft, born on 3 February 1922 in Amsterdam. She was a seamstress by profession and married in Amsterdam Abraham Cohen, born there too on 17 April 1919 as son of Jacob Cohen and Sientje Tokkie. Abraham Cohen was a cabinet maker. He lived with his parents and sibs at Boterdiepstraat 4 2nd floor in Amsterdam, but after he got married to Hendrina, both moved still to a living space at Lekstraat 24 1st floor.

On 17 July Hendrina and Abraham were summoned to report for the so-called “Arbeitseinsatz”, the provision of additional work under police surveillance in Germany, which they did. In the night of 19 July they were transported by train (Train no.1 at 02.16 h) from Amsterdam Central Station to Westerbork and from there they were deported the 21st to Auschwitz. This transport contained 931 deportees and arrived a few days later, and Hendrina and Abraham were put to work as forced labourers.

It is unknown where they ended up, nor which “work” they had to do, nor the exact date of their death is known. After the war, the Dutch Authorities have established, also based on research and testimonials of survivors, about the inhumane conditions in Auschwitz and the hardship prisoners had to endure, that Hendrina Cohen-van Delft and Abraham Cohen no longer could be alive after 30 September 1942.

The Municipality of Amsterdam then was commissioned to draw up certificates of death for both of them, in which was stated that Hendrina Cohen-van Delft and Abraham Cohen have died in Auschwitz on 30 September 1942.
